The Garri Trio Pulled Apart
The three garri lines diverged slightly this week. Yellow rose 0.3% to ₦1,460 across 10 markets, Garri (White) fell 2.3% to ₦1,300 across nine markets and Garri (Ijebu) was unchanged at ₦1,260 across five. Yellow now sits ₦160 above white, a premium of 12.3%, wider than it was a week ago because white fell while yellow held. Households that treat the two as substitutes gained by moving toward white this week.
A Price That Doubles Between Markets
A paint costs ₦1,000 at Mile 12 Market and ₦2,000 at Ajah Market, a 100% premium. That matches the ratio recorded on white garri, where Oyingbo charges ₦1,000 and Ajah ₦2,000. Ajah is the priciest market for both varieties. A household buying four paints of yellow garri a month spends ₦4,000 at Mile 12 prices and ₦8,000 at Ajah prices, a difference of ₦4,000 in a month against a weekly movement of ₦4 per paint.
Where the Sources Agree and Diverge
Nairametrics reported National Bureau of Statistics data showing white garri sold loose down 39.86% year-on-year in April 2026 while rising 0.93% month-on-month, a mix of a sharp annual fall and a small monthly uptick that resembles the flat weekly reading for yellow garri in Lagos.
