White Garri Bucks the Lagos Slide

White Garri Bucks the Lagos Slide

White garri was the one staple that got dearer in Lagos in the week of 2 October 2026. FoodPrices Nigeria data from the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems market survey shows the mean price of a paint of Garri (White) rose from ₦1,260 to ₦1,278, an ₦18 or 1.4% increase on the week of 25 September. In a week when 11 product lines fell by 1% or more, it was the only line to rise by that much.

Yellow and Ijebu Did Not Follow

The rise was confined to white garri. Garri (Yellow) fell 0.8% from ₦1,378 to ₦1,367 per paint, and Garri (Ijebu) held at ₦1,200 across 5 markets. The gap between yellow and white garri has narrowed as a result. A week ago yellow cost ₦118 more per paint than white. It now costs ₦89 more, a 6.96% premium.

The white garri mean this week covers 9 markets, against 10 the week before, so part of the move may reflect which markets reported rather than a change in price at the same stalls.

Where to Buy

The cheapest paint of white garri in Lagos is still ₦1,000 at Oyingbo Market, and the dearest is still ₦1,500 at Sabo Market Yaba, a 50% premium. Both ends of the range are unchanged from the previous week, which places the rise in the middle of the market rather than at either extreme.

For a household that buys four paints of white garri a month, the weekly move adds ₦72 a month at the mean. Buying at Oyingbo Market instead of Sabo Market Yaba saves ₦2,000 a month on the same four paints.

What Other Surveys Say

The national picture for September pointed down. Legit.ng reported on 3 October that a 50kg bag of white garri fell from ₦22,000 in August to ₦19,500 in September, an 11.36% drop, and yellow garri from ₦21,000 to ₦18,000, a 14.29% drop. Those bag figures agree with the September easing, while the Lagos paint data now shows white garri edging back up. A separate Legit.ng report on 29 September placed garri on its list of food items Nigerians should buy before prices rise again. The 1.4% move is the first sign of that in the Lagos survey, though one week is not yet a trend.
