Tatashe Leads Second Week of Pepper Falls

Pepper prices in Lagos fell for a second consecutive week in the week of 2 October 2026. FoodPrices Nigeria data from the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems market survey shows the mean price of tatashe fell from ₦2,420 to ₦2,190 per kg across 10 markets, a ₦230 or 9.50% decline on the week of 25 September. No other line in the 27-line Lagos basket fell as far.

Two Weeks, One Direction

Pepper (Rodo) fell from ₦2,280 to ₦2,090 per kg, a ₦190 or 8.33% drop, and shombo fell from ₦2,240 to ₦2,160, a ₦80 or 3.57% drop. All three means cover 10 markets.

Set against the week of 18 September, the declines compound. Tatashe has fallen from ₦2,600 to ₦2,190, a ₦410 or 15.77% drop in two weeks. Rodo has fallen from ₦2,480 to ₦2,090, a ₦390 or 15.73% drop. Shombo has fallen from ₦2,340 to ₦2,160, a ₦180 or 7.69% drop.

The Top of the Market Is Coming Down

This week the dearest markets cut hardest. The highest tatashe and shombo prices, both at Mushin Market, fell from ₦2,800 to ₦2,500 per kg, a 10.71% drop. The highest rodo price, at Oyingbo Market, fell from ₦2,600 to ₦2,500, down 3.85%.

Agbalata Market remains the cheapest market for all three peppers, at ₦1,400 per kg for tatashe and ₦1,200 for both rodo and shombo. Tatashe at Agbalata actually rose from ₦1,300 to ₦1,400, up 7.69%. With the top coming down and the bottom holding or rising, the gap between the cheapest and dearest markets narrowed. The premium for tatashe at Mushin over Agbalata fell from 115.4% to 78.6%, and the premium for shombo fell from 133.3% to 108.3%.

What the Pepper Basket Costs Now

A household buying 1kg each of tatashe, rodo and shombo now pays ₦6,440 at the citywide mean, down from ₦6,940 a week earlier, a ₦500 or 7.20% saving. Against the ₦7,420 the same basket cost in the week of 18 September, the saving is ₦980, or 13.21%. For a caterer or food vendor buying 10kg of each pepper every week, that is ₦9,800 less per week than two weeks ago.

Peppers Bunch Together

The three peppers now sit within ₦100 of each other. Tatashe at ₦2,190 is the dearest, followed by shombo at ₦2,160 and rodo at ₦2,090. The gap between the dearest and cheapest pepper is 4.78%, against 8.04% a week earlier, when tatashe stood at ₦2,420 and shombo at ₦2,240.

What Other Surveys Say

Legit.ng reported on 3 October that pepper was among ten items that became cheaper in Nigeria in September, citing Nairametrics figures that put a big bag of pepper down 20% to ₦80,000 and a medium bag down 11.11% to ₦40,000. Those are bag prices rather than per-kg means, but they agree with the direction in FoodPrices Nigeria data. Nairametrics also reported that the National Bureau of Statistics named pepper among the items behind the August easing in food prices, which places the start of this decline before the two weeks of Lagos survey data covered here.
