Sweet Potatoes Slip 2.6% Across Lagos

Sweet potatoes got cheaper in Lagos in the week of 2 October 2026. FoodPrices Nigeria data from the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems market survey shows the mean price fell from ₦780 to ₦760 per kg across 10 markets, a ₦20 or 2.6% decline on the week of 25 September. The price had held at ₦780 in the previous week's survey.

Half Price at Agege

The cheapest kg of sweet potatoes in Lagos is ₦500 at Agege Market, 34.2% below the citywide mean. The dearest is ₦1,000 at Agbalata Market, 31.6% above it. Both ends of the range are unchanged from the previous week, so the fall in the mean came from markets in the middle of the range.

A household buying 3kg a week pays ₦2,280 at the mean, ₦1,500 at Agege Market and ₦3,000 at Agbalata Market. Over four weeks, the gap between the cheapest and dearest market comes to ₦6,000 on the same quantity.

Yam Moves Less

The other tuber in the survey barely moved. A medium yam tuber fell 0.4% from ₦2,380 to ₦2,370. The lowest yam price rose from ₦1,500 to ₦1,600 at Agbalata Market, while the highest held at ₦3,000 at Ajah Market. Sweet potatoes, at 2.6%, fell more than six times as fast as yam this week.

What Other Surveys Say

Legit.ng reported on 3 October that sweet potatoes topped its list of ten foods that became cheaper in Nigeria in September, citing Nairametrics figures for a bag down from ₦35,000 in August to ₦32,000 in September, an 8.57% fall. That bag price agrees with the direction of the Lagos per-kg mean, which eased this week after holding flat the week before.
