Short Grain Rice 25kg Slips 0.8%

Imported Rice (Short Grain) at 25kg Bag fell from ₦26,550 to ₦26,350 across all 10 Lagos markets in the week to 14 August 2026, a decline of ₦200 or 0.8%, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems market survey.

Full Market Coverage, Narrow Spread

This is one of only two rice lines drawn from all 10 markets, the other being the 50kg bag of the same grain. It also carries the tightest spread of any bag in the survey. A 25kg bag costs ₦25,500 at Mushin Market and ₦28,000 at Ajah Market, a gap of ₦2,500 or 9.8%. By comparison, the long grain 25kg bag ranges 24.5% between its cheapest and dearest market.

Cheaper Than Long Grain by ₦2,212

At ₦26,350 against ₦28,562 for Imported Rice (Long Grain) at the same size, short grain sits ₦2,212 lower, a discount of 7.7%. Buyers switching between the two grades save more from that choice than from any weekly movement recorded this week. Splitting into two 25kg bags rather than buying one 50kg bag costs ₦150 more at the mean, a penalty of only 0.3%, so the smaller bag is close to price-neutral for short grain buyers.

Where the Reporting Agrees

Legit.ng reported in August 2026 that rice prices had fallen sharply in parts of Nigeria, with a 50kg bag selling for between ₦48,000 and ₦49,000, agreeing on the direction while showing that Lagos means sit above the cheapest national quotes. AgroNigeria agreed, quoting Rice Millers Association of Nigeria national chairman Peter Dama as saying consumers in Lagos were among those benefiting from lower prices. BusinessDay reported the tariff reduction on bulk rice to 47.5% from 70% that underpins the trend. Platts research carried by Milling Middle East and Africa agreed that oversupply in the region had weakened supplier margins.

Coverage Note

With all 10 markets contributing, this is among the most reliable readings in the survey and a fair benchmark for anyone tracking imported rice at bag scale in Lagos.
