The only two lines in the Lagos basket to rise by more than one per cent in the week to 14 August 2026 were imported rice at the smallest unit sold. Imported Rice (Short Grain) climbed 3.3% from a mean ₦833 to ₦861 per derica across nine markets, and Imported Rice (Long Grain) climbed 2.6% from ₦944 to ₦969 per derica across eight. Both figures are means from the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems survey.
The Same Rice Fell At Bag Scale
In the same week and across the same market network, imported rice retreated at every wholesale unit. Long grain fell 1.3% at 25kg, from ₦28,938 to ₦28,562, and 1.2% at 50kg, from ₦56,938 to ₦56,250. Short grain fell 0.8% at 25kg to ₦26,350 and 0.7% at 50kg to ₦52,550. At paint scale the two barely moved, with short grain up 0.3% to ₦4,389 and long grain down 0.3% to ₦4,712.
A commodity under genuine supply or currency pressure rises at every unit at once. This did not. The divergence sits between the counter and the warehouse, which makes it a retail pricing decision at the derica scale rather than a shift in the cost of landing rice in Lagos.
Why The Cost Base Is Not Pushing
The currency argument does not support a rise this week either. Legit.ng reported the naira at ₦1,343.32 to the dollar on 18 August 2026, a five month high, after Central Bank of Nigeria measures to improve foreign exchange liquidity. Supply is not tightening either. Legit.ng reported earlier this month that 50kg bags had fallen to about ₦48,000 in parts of the country as cheaper imports reached the market, with local millers absorbing the pain. Nairametrics had already documented bag prices falling more than ₦25,000 year on year in Abuja on improved supply corridors and a steadier exchange rate.
What It Means For Buyers
Households that buy rice by the derica paid more this week. Households that buy by the bag paid less. The gap between Agbalata Market at ₦53,000 for a 50kg bag of long grain and Ajah Market at ₦60,000 is ₦7,000, a premium of 13.2% for the same bag. Anyone with the cash to move up a unit size is being paid to do so this week.
The qualification matters for anyone reading national coverage. Rice is not rising in Lagos. It is rising in one measure and falling in three.
