The smallest measure of rice got cheaper across Lagos in the week of 2 October 2026. FoodPrices Nigeria data from the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems market survey shows the mean derica price of Nigerian Manufactured Rice fell from ₦850 to ₦817 across 6 markets, a ₦33 or 3.9% decline on the week of 25 September. It was the third-largest fall in the 27-line Lagos basket.
A Rise Reversed
The fall undoes the previous week's increase. In the week of 25 September, the local rice derica had risen from ₦825 to ₦850. At ₦817, it now sits 1.0% below where it stood on 18 September, so households buying by the derica are back to paying slightly less than they did a fortnight ago.
All Three Dericas Fell
The decline was not confined to local rice. Imported long-grain rice by the derica fell from ₦906 to ₦886 across 8 markets, a ₦20 or 2.2% decline. Imported short-grain fell from ₦833 to ₦817 across 9 markets, a 2.0% decline. Local rice and imported short-grain now cost exactly the same at the derica, ₦817 each, while long-grain costs 8.4% more at ₦886.
For a household that buys two derica of local rice a day, the cost falls from ₦1,700 to ₦1,634, a saving of ₦66 a day or ₦1,980 over 30 days.
Where to Buy
The cheapest local rice derica is ₦800 at Mile 12 Market and the dearest is ₦900 at Mushin Market, a 12.5% premium. Mushin's price fell from ₦1,000 the week before, halving the gap from 25%. Mile 12 Market is also the cheapest for imported short-grain at ₦750 a derica, against ₦1,000 at Agbalata Market, a 33.3% premium. For long-grain, Ajah Market is cheapest at ₦800 and Agege Market dearest at ₦1,000, a 25% premium.
Paints and Bags Move Less
The larger measures moved by less than 1%. The paint of Nigerian Manufactured Rice fell 0.8% to ₦4,317, short-grain fell 0.9% to ₦4,244, and long-grain edged up 0.1% to ₦4,469. The 50kg bag of local rice fell 0.6% from ₦51,571 to ₦51,286.
What Other Surveys Say
Legit.ng listed rice among ten items that became cheaper in Nigeria in September, drawing in part on Foodprices.ng prices. On 29 September, Legit.ng described the national rice market as going through a year-to-date price correction, with Nigerian manufactured rice down from ₦60,000 per 50kg in January to ₦53,000 in September. Both agree with the downward direction in this week's Lagos derica figures.
