Rice got cheaper for Lagos households buying by the derica in the week of 2 October 2026. FoodPrices Nigeria data from the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems market survey shows the mean derica of Nigerian Manufactured Rice fell from ₦850 to ₦817 across 6 markets, a ₦33 or 3.88% decline on the week of 25 September. That reverses the previous week's rise from ₦825 to ₦850 and leaves the derica 0.97% below where it stood on 18 September.
All Three Dericas Fell
The decline was not confined to local rice. The imported long-grain derica fell from ₦906 to ₦886 across 8 markets, down 2.21%, and the imported short-grain derica fell 2.0% from ₦833 to ₦817 across 9 markets. Local and imported short-grain rice now sell at the same mean derica price of ₦817, while long-grain costs 8.45% more at ₦886.
Mushin Leads the Cut
The top of the local rice market came down the most. The dearest derica of Nigerian Manufactured Rice is now ₦900 at Mushin Market, against ₦1,000 at the same market a week earlier. The cheapest remains ₦800 at Mile 12 Market, so the gap between the cheapest and dearest market has narrowed from 25% to 12.5%. Mile 12 is also the cheapest market for the short-grain derica at ₦750, while Ajah Market offers the cheapest long-grain derica at ₦800.
For a household buying two derica of local rice a day, this week's fall saves ₦66 a day, or ₦1,980 over 30 days.
Bags Follow, More Slowly
The larger sizes eased too, though by less. The 50kg bag of imported long-grain rice fell 1.16% from ₦53,875 to ₦53,250, and the 25kg bag fell 1.16% from ₦26,938 to ₦26,625. Nigerian Manufactured Rice slipped 0.55% to ₦51,286 per 50kg, and imported short-grain eased 0.20% to ₦50,600. The cheapest 50kg bag of long-grain is ₦51,000 at Agbalata Market and the dearest is ₦54,000 at Ile-Epo Market.
What Other Surveys Say
Legit.ng reported on 7 October that rice prices fell across all major categories between August and September. Its figures put the derica of Nigerian manufactured rice down from ₦864.58 to ₦833.33, the long-grain derica down from ₦953.13 to ₦923.44 and the short-grain derica down from ₦840.28 to ₦826.39. That agrees with the direction in FoodPrices Nigeria data, and this week's Lagos means of ₦817 for local rice and ₦886 for long-grain sit 1.96% and 4.05% below those September averages. Legit.ng's September figure of ₦51,571.43 for a 50kg bag of Nigerian manufactured rice matches the Lagos mean of the previous week, ₦51,571, to the naira. An earlier Legit.ng report on 29 September described the year's rice trend as a correction rather than a crash, which fits the gradual weekly declines in the bag sizes.
