Rice Derica Gives Back Last Week's Gain

Rice got cheaper by the derica across Lagos in the week of 2 October 2026. FoodPrices Nigeria data from the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems market survey shows the mean derica price of Nigerian Manufactured Rice fell from ₦850 to ₦817 across 6 markets, a 3.9% decline on the week of 25 September. That reverses the rise from ₦825 to ₦850 recorded a week earlier, and leaves the derica below where it stood two weeks ago.

All Three Rice Types Fell

The decline was not limited to local rice. The derica of imported short-grain rice fell 2.0% from ₦833 to ₦817 across 9 markets, and imported long-grain fell 2.2% from ₦906 to ₦886 across 8 markets. Nigerian Manufactured Rice and imported short-grain now sell at the same mean of ₦817 per derica. Long-grain costs 8.45% more.

For a household that buys two derica of local rice a day, the cost falls from ₦1,700 to ₦1,634, a saving of ₦66 a day or ₦1,980 over 30 days.

Where the Derica Is Cheapest

Mile 12 Market is the cheapest market for both local and short-grain rice by the derica, at ₦800 and ₦750. The dearest local derica is ₦900 at Mushin Market, down from ₦1,000 a week earlier, which narrows the spread to 12.5%. For short-grain, the dearest is ₦1,000 at Agbalata Market, 33.3% above Mile 12. The cheapest long-grain derica is ₦800 at Ajah Market, against ₦1,000 at Agege Market.

The Bags Eased Too

Bulk prices moved in the same direction, by less. The 50kg bag of imported long-grain fell 1.2% from ₦53,875 to ₦53,250 and the 25kg bag fell 1.2% to ₦26,625. Nigerian Manufactured Rice slipped 0.6% to ₦51,286 per 50kg, and imported short-grain 0.2% to ₦50,600. The cheapest 50kg bag in Lagos is ₦48,000 at Agege Market, for both local and short-grain rice.

What Other Surveys Say

Legit.ng listed rice among ten items that became cheaper in Nigeria in September, putting manufactured Nigerian rice at about ₦51,571 per 50kg and imported long-grain at ₦54,328. Those figures sit within 0.6% and 2.0% of this week's Lagos means and agree on the downward direction. Legit.ng also reported on 29 September that rice prices had undergone a year-to-date correction, with imported long-grain at ₦55,000 per 50kg in September against ₦70,000 in January. The same report cited BusinessDay figures putting branded foreign parboiled rice in Lagos at about ₦68,000 per 50kg, well above the Ministry survey means.
