Pepper Falls Again as Lagos Prices Ease

FoodPrices Lagos Nigeria Vegetables WeeklyRoundup
Pepper Falls Again as Lagos Prices Ease

Prices fell across most of the Lagos food basket in the week of 2 October 2026, and vegetables fell furthest. FoodPrices Nigeria data drawn from the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems market survey shows that 12 of 27 product lines moved by 1% or more against the week of 25 September. Eleven of those went down. Every figure below is a mean price across Lagos markets, filtered for outliers.

Peppers Lead for a Second Week

Tatashe posted the steepest fall in the basket, down 9.5% from ₦2,420 to ₦2,190 per kg across 10 markets. Pepper (Rodo) fell 8.3% from ₦2,280 to ₦2,090 per kg, and shombo fell 3.6% from ₦2,240 to ₦2,160. This is the second consecutive week of pepper declines. Over two weeks, tatashe has fallen from ₦2,600 to ₦2,190, a 15.77% drop, and rodo from ₦2,480 to ₦2,090, a 15.73% drop.

A household buying 1kg each of rodo, tatashe and shombo now pays ₦6,440 at the mean, against ₦6,940 a week earlier and ₦7,420 two weeks earlier. That is ₦980 less, a 13.21% saving in a fortnight. At Agbalata Market, still the cheapest market for all three, the same basket costs ₦3,800.

Tomatoes Ease, Onions Hold

Tomatoes fell 3.2% from ₦1,860 to ₦1,800 per kg, ranging from ₦800 at Agbalata Market to ₦2,200 at Oyingbo Market. Onions were the only vegetable that did not fall, holding at ₦1,030 per kg, from ₦700 at Mile 12 Market to ₦1,500 at Fresh Food Hub Mushin. A stew base of 1kg each of tomatoes, rodo and onions now costs ₦4,920, down ₦250 or 4.84% on the week.

Rice, Eggs and Tubers Follow

Rice moved by 1% or more on five of its 12 lines, all of them down, led by the derica of Nigerian Manufactured Rice at minus 3.9%. A crate of Medium Sized Eggs fell 1.8% to ₦5,400, and sweet potatoes fell 2.6% to ₦760 per kg. Beans barely moved: Beans (Drum) eased 0.4% to ₦4,440 per paint and Beans (Oloyin) 0.2% to ₦4,900.

The Lone Riser

Garri (White) was the only line in Lagos to rise by 1% or more, up 1.4% from ₦1,260 to ₦1,278 per paint.

What Other Surveys Say

Legit.ng reported on 3 October that 36 commodities recorded price declines in September, against 27 in August, and listed pepper among items that had become cheaper, citing Nairametrics figures for a big bag of pepper down 20% to ₦80,000. That agrees with the direction in FoodPrices Nigeria data. Not every source agrees. A separate Legit.ng report on 29 September cited a ColdHubs market report marking pepper and tomato prices as increasing for the week of 28 September to 3 October. The Lagos mean prices recorded by the Ministry survey for that week point the other way.
