Nigeria throws away an energy source it badly needs. Across the country, large quantities of agricultural waste are dumped or burnt every season, adding to pollution when they could be converted into fuel, according to reporting by The Guardian on research into farm-based biofuels. What the Waste Could Yield
The numbers are striking. Nigeria's crop residues carry a technical potential of about 84 million tonnes, enough to yield roughly 14,766 million litres of cellulosic ethanol a year alongside large volumes of biogas, according to a study in the journal Sustainability. Agricultural residues alone hold an energy potential of about 1.09 exajoules, with cassava, maize, oil palm, plantain, rice and sorghum the major contributors, according to a resource assessment in MDPI Resources. Cassava residues account for the largest single share of that biomass energy, according to an analysis of agricultural biomass power in ScienceDirect, which notes that Nigeria's Energy Masterplan already backs the use of biomass for clean heat, electricity and biofuel.
Fuel Without the Food Fight
A common worry about biofuels is that they compete with food, but residues sidestep that trap. Because peels, stalks and shells are by-products rather than crops grown for fuel, using them avoids the food-versus-energy conflict that dogs first-generation biofuels, according to a review of biomass utilisation in ScienceDirect. Biofuels such as ethanol and biodiesel can be blended with existing fuels without major engine modifications, making the switch practical and relatively cheap, a researcher explained to The Guardian, with residues broken down into sugars and fermented into ethanol or heated to produce bio-oil and synthesis gas.
A Fix for More Than Energy
The appeal is that one intervention tackles several problems together. Converting farm waste into fuel would address energy insecurity, environmental degradation, rural unemployment and climate commitments at the same time, a University of Nigeria microbiologist argued in an interview with Vanguard. Cheaper, locally made fuel would also cut the diesel bills that push up the cost of running mills, cold rooms and the trucks that move food to market.
