Nigeria Takes Its Food Trade to Paris

Nigeria used one of the world's biggest farm exhibitions to make a statement about how it wants to trade. Flour Mills of Nigeria, one of Africa's largest food and agro-allied groups, partnered the French government at the 2026 edition of the Salon International de l'Agriculture, also known as the Paris International Agricultural Show, which ran from February 21 to March 1, according to Leadership. The fair is a global heavyweight, drawing 607,503 visitors, nearly 4,000 animals and more than 1,000 exhibitors in 2025, according to MSME Africa.

A Pavilion Full of Nigerian Heavyweights

Flour Mills was not alone. A Nigerian Pavilion was launched on February 23 at Pavilion 7 of the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, bringing together leaders from government, business and finance to showcase the country's agricultural potential, according to Nairametrics. Convened under the France Nigeria Business Council and supported by Access Bank, the Dangote Group, Flour Mills of Nigeria, the BUA Group and Zenith Bank, the pavilion signalled a shift in how Nigerian institutions want to engage with global markets, presenting themselves as value-chain participants seeking partners rather than commodity suppliers seeking buyers, according to Proshare.

Why France, Why Now

The choice of partner is strategic. Nigeria is already France's largest Sub-Saharan African market, accounting for roughly 8 per cent of France's total trade with the continent, and the diplomatic weight behind the event was underlined when France's Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs visited the pavilion on February 26 to reaffirm state-level commitment to deeper bilateral trade and investment, according to Proshare. For a company that spans flour milling, pasta, edible oils, animal feeds, sugar and integrated farming, the show is a technical showcase to demonstrate processing capacity, supply-chain efficiency and quality standards to international buyers, according to Milling Middle East & Africa.

From Buyer to Partner

Flour Mills framed its presence around long-term relationships rather than one-off deals. As a returning sponsor and a member of the France Nigeria Business Council, the group presented the collaboration as one built on a shared value agenda and a six-decade record of investment in Nigeria, according to Leadership. The 2026 show's theme, focused on transferring knowledge between generations to drive technological advancement, dovetailed with the company's pitch that Nigeria can move up the value chain rather than remain a raw-material exporter, according to MSME Africa.

Deals struck at exhibitions take time to reach the market stall, but stronger processing and export links can steady supply and prices over the long run. FoodPrices Nigeria tracks verified retail prices across Lagos markets and follows the trade partnerships that shape the country's food economy.
