Nigeria Plans a Livestock Hub for Each State

The Federal Government wants every state to develop a livestock specialty, unveiling a Federal-State-Private Sector partnership model built around species-specific Livestock Development Centres across the country. The centres are designed to create investment opportunities across the livestock economy, according to MSME Africa.

Commercial Clusters, Not Government Farms

The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, was clear that the centres would not be conventional government farms or projects driven solely by public funding. Instead, they would function as commercially oriented clusters designed to attract investment and develop different stages of livestock production, according to The Trumpet. Under the model, each participating state would identify a livestock species or value chain that best suits its environment, available feed and water resources, market opportunities, community acceptance and investment prospects.

A Full Value Chain

The reach of each hub is meant to be wide. The centres could support animal breeding, feed and fodder production, veterinary services, aggregation, cattle finishing, dairy production, poultry, and sheep and goat farming, according to The Trumpet. Other components could include meat and dairy processing, cold-chain facilities, logistics, biogas production and organic fertiliser manufacturing, according to MSME Africa, turning single sites into integrated production ecosystems rather than isolated farms.

Why It Matters

The model addresses a persistent gap. Nigeria ranks among Africa's largest livestock producers yet still imports meat and dairy, and much of its production remains informal and low-yield. By concentrating investment, breeding and processing around each state's natural strengths, the centres are meant to lift productivity, attract private capital and build the kind of modern markets and cold-chain systems the sector has long lacked, aims the ministry has tied to food security, jobs and economic growth under its livestock transformation drive, according to the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development.

Stronger, better-organised livestock production is one route to steadier supplies of affordable animal protein. FoodPrices Nigeria tracks verified retail prices for eggs, meat and other proteins across Lagos markets, where the payoff from a more productive livestock sector would eventually reach the shopper.
