: Nigeria Locks In 2026 Fertiliser Supply Early, Saving ₦61.58 Billion as Global Prices Climb

The Federal Government has secured Nigeria's fertiliser supply for the 2026 wet season and saved the country tens of millions of dollars by buying ahead of fresh disruptions in the global market, according to PFI NPK Limited, the implementation vehicle for the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative. The Director of PFI NPK Limited, Dr Armstrong Ume Takang, disclosed the figures in a statement reported by Punch.

The Savings and the Volumes

Financial data reviewed alongside the procurement records put total savings at $43.99 million, equivalent to roughly ₦61.58 billion, when measured against prevailing spot prices, as Daily Trust reported. The initiative secured nine vessels carrying a combined 407,304 metric tonnes of raw materials during the first quarter of 2026, bringing total stock available for NPK production to 534,219 metric tonnes once opening inventory is included, according to Leadership. As of mid-April 2026, more than 323,109 metric tonnes, about 6.5 million 50kg bags, had been released to blending plants nationwide, with around 198,264 metric tonnes, roughly 4 million bags, already taken up ahead of peak planting.

Why the Timing Mattered

The early buying locked in Granular Ammonium Sulphate at $228 per metric tonne against a current market price of $343, Diammonium Phosphate at $775 against $950, and Muriate of Potash at $400 against $430, the Leadership report showed. Takang said the strategy was designed to shield Nigeria from external shocks, explaining that the government moved early to secure supply, lock in pricing and put the necessary financial instruments in place before market pressures hit, according to Punch.

A Domestic Blending Model

PFI NPK supplies raw materials to 94 blending plants registered under the Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria and does not import finished fertiliser, ensuring NPK is blended locally, the Gazette reported. The initiative delivered 648,000 metric tonnes of raw materials in 2025 and is targeting 1.52 million metric tonnes in 2026.

Fertiliser availability and price feed directly into harvest size, and harvest size eventually shapes what shoppers pay. FoodPrices Nigeria tracks verified retail prices across Lagos markets, where the results of this season's planting will show up in the months ahead.
