Nigeria Eyes Flour in Its Plantains

Nigeria grows plantains in abundance, but too much of the crop spoils before anyone can sell it, and the government is pushing processing as the fix. The Federal Government, through the National Horticultural Research Institute, has moved to boost banana and plantain production and cut post-harvest losses, with an official describing plantain as a key food security crop and a low-capital, high-return venture suited to almost every Nigerian soil, according to Tribune Online.

A Demand That Outruns Supply

The processing opportunity is sizeable. Nigeria's plantain flour production has been put at about 25,000 metric tonnes against demand of roughly 125,000 metric tonnes, leaving a gap of nearly 99,800 metric tonnes, according to BusinessDay, citing a report by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The same reporting noted that processing helps cut post-harvest losses that run at about 30 per cent, and that plantain snacks are already being exported to buyers in Europe, the United States and Asia.

Value Waiting to Be Captured

Plantain flour and chips have found a growing market among younger, urban consumers, and the wider value chain covering farming, processing and retail is valued at over â‚¦500 billion a year, according to a market overview of the sector. Turning ripe bunches into shelf-stable flour and snacks extends their life well beyond the few days fresh fruit survives in the open.

Less waste and more processing mean steadier supply and better value for a staple many households buy weekly. FoodPrices Nigeria tracks verified retail prices across Lagos markets and follows the drive to keep more of the plantain harvest from spoiling.
