Mushin Market Rice Retreats as Nigerian Manufactured 50kg Bag Falls to N54,000 From N75,000

Rice has been the standout faller at Mushin Market through the first quarter. A 50kg bag of Nigerian Manufactured Rice opened the year at N75,000 in the week of January 26 and dropped to N54,000 by the week of March 16, a fall of N21,000 or 28.0 percent. The decline was broad rather than isolated to one label. Imported Rice (Long Grain) by the 50kg bag slipped from N80,000 to N71,000 over the same window, a drop of N9,000 or about 11.3 percent, and Tomato Aroso Rice in the same weight came down from N71,000 in the week of February 16 to N60,000 by mid March, 15.5 percent lower.

Smaller measures moved with the bags. A paint bucket of Imported Rice (Short Grain) eased from N6,500 to N5,800, a 10.8 percent fall, which means the relief reached buyers who do not purchase by the sack. For a household budgeting week to week, that paint bucket figure is the one to watch, and it is visible on the Mushin Market page.

The rice retreat did not extend to every staple. A 50kg bag of Beans (Oloyin) at the same market rose from N55,000 in the week of February 16 to N65,000 by the week of March 16, an 18.2 percent increase, so the grains shelf split into a falling rice side and a rising beans side. Shoppers stocking a full pantry can use the price comparison tool to weigh where the savings on rice offset the climb in beans.

Several factors sit behind softer rice. The exchange rate shapes the landed cost of imported grain, and the Central Bank of Nigeria publishes the policy and rate decisions that move that cost. The United States Department of Agriculture tracks global rice supply and milling output that feed into what reaches Lagos wholesalers. Local milling capacity and the timing of the domestic harvest also weigh on the Nigerian Manufactured price, a dynamic the Food and Agriculture Organization follows in its Nigeria updates.

For now the read at Mushin is a buyer's market for rice and a tighter one for beans. The cheapest captured rice figure can shift week to week, so the live numbers on the Mushin Market real-time page are the reliable guide before any bulk purchase.
