Yam Records The Biggest Weekly Decline
The mean price of medium-sized yam recorded the sharpest weekly decline among the food products tracked across Lagos markets during the week of July 24, 2026.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems market survey, the average price of one medium-sized yam tuber fell from ₦3,380 on July 17 to ₦3,055 on July 24. This represents a 9.6% week-on-week decline across 10 markets.
The movement makes yam the biggest decliner among the food items covered in the weekly FoodPrices tracker. The reduction also stands out against several other staple products that recorded smaller declines during the same period.
Price Differences Remain Across Markets
Despite the fall in the Lagos mean price, shoppers continued to encounter different prices depending on the market they visited.
Ile-Epo Market recorded the cheapest price for a medium-sized yam at ₦2,150, while Mile 12 Market recorded the highest at ₦3,500.
The difference between the lowest and highest recorded prices shows that the overall Lagos mean does not represent a uniform price across every market. Consumers may therefore find it useful to compare prices before completing their purchases.
What The Weekly Movement Means
The decline in the mean price provides a lower average price point for yam compared with the previous week. Yam remains an important staple in household food consumption, making changes in its market price relevant to consumers and food businesses.
The FoodPrices data is based on mean prices across surveyed Lagos markets. It should therefore be viewed as a measure of the broader market movement rather than the exact amount every shopper will pay at every stall.
