Imported Rice (Long Grain) at 25kg Bag fell from ₦28,938 to ₦28,562 across eight Lagos markets in the week to 14 August 2026, a decline of about ₦375 or 1.3%, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems market survey.
The Steepest Fall Among Rice Bags
No other bag measure fell as far in percentage terms this week. The 50kg bag of the same grain fell 1.2%, Imported Rice (Short Grain) at 25kg fell 0.8% and Nigerian Manufactured Rice fell 0.8% at both 25kg and 50kg. The pattern across the category is consistent: wholesale-scale units eased while the smallest retail measures moved up, with the same grain rising 2.6% at 1 Derica.
The Widest Bag Spread in Lagos
A 25kg bag costs ₦26,500 at Agbalata Market and ₦33,000 at Ajah Market. The ₦6,500 gap is a 24.5% premium, the widest of any bag line in this week's survey. A buyer taking two bags a month spends ₦53,000 at Agbalata prices and ₦66,000 at Ajah prices, a difference of ₦13,000.
The 50kg Bag Is Still Better Value
Two 25kg bags cost ₦57,124 at this week's mean, against ₦56,250 for one 50kg bag of the same grain. Splitting the purchase costs ₦874 more for the same quantity, a penalty of 1.6%. Households that can afford the larger outlay capture that saving on top of the week's decline.
Import Policy Sits Behind the Softening
BusinessDay reported that Nigeria cut import duty on bulk rice to 47.5% from 70% and on broken rice to 30% under its 2026 fiscal policy measures, with paddy prices slumping 51% to ₦350,800 a tonne. The Whistler agreed on those figures and reported that reduced duties are expected to make rice more widely available at lower prices. Legit.ng agreed on the market outcome, reporting that dealers cut prices as imported grain flooded the country. Platts research carried by Milling Middle East and Africa attributed the pressure to a structural surplus in the West African corridor. All four agree on the direction of bag-scale prices, which matches this week's Lagos figure.
