Lagos has added another link to the network it is building to feed its enormous population. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu commissioned a new Mid-Level Agro-Produce Hub in Agege on August 12, 2026, as part of efforts to overhaul food distribution in Nigeria's commercial capital and contain rising costs for its 25 million residents, according to BusinessDay.
A Hub-and-Spoke Network
The Agege facility, in the Pen Cinema area, is the third in the state's hub-and-spoke network, following earlier hubs in Mushin and Abijo, and is designed to shorten supply chains and cut post-harvest losses, according to BusinessDay. It sits within a broader Lagos Food Systems Transformation Agenda that also includes the under-construction Central Food Systems and Logistics Hub in Ketu-Ereyun, Epe, the same report noted.
Part of a Bigger Build
The hubs are one piece of a large public investment in food infrastructure. Lagos also runs the Imota Rice Mill, widely regarded as the largest in Africa, which produced more than 500,000 bags of Eko Rice during a recent review period, and the Lagos Fresh Food Hub in Idi-Oro, Mushin, which recorded over ₦1.2 billion in transactions across 76 market days since May 2025, registering more than 850 vendors and supporting over 7,000 jobs, according to Milling Middle East & Africa. The state has framed these projects around de-risking agricultural investment and guaranteeing market access for farmers, aggregators, processors and logistics operators, the same report noted.
Why It Matters for Prices
Lagos grows little of what it eats, so the journey from farmgate to plate is where much of the cost is added. Shorter chains and less spoilage can ease the pressure on a city of 25 million that imports most of its food from other states, according to BusinessDay. Every basket of tomatoes or bag of rice that reaches a market without rotting on a congested road is a small saving that can show up at the stall.
