Lagos food prices moved in one direction in the week to 14 August 2026. Of the 27 product and unit lines FoodPrices Nigeria tracks across the city, 19 fell, 5 rose and 3 held flat against the week of 7 August. The figures come from the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems market survey and every one of them is a mean across markets rather than a price at any single stall.
Fresh Produce Drove The Fall
The four largest declines were all vegetables. Tomatoes fell 7.2% to a mean ₦2,190 per kilogramme across ten markets, tatashe fell 5.6% to ₦3,560, pepper (rodo) fell 5.4% to ₦3,660 and shombo fell 4.9% to ₦3,600. Among staples, medium sized yam recorded the sharpest move at 4.4%, dropping from ₦3,160 to ₦3,020 per tuber across all ten markets.
Beans fell on every measure recorded. Drum at derica scale fell 3.3% from ₦1,000 to ₦967, Oloyin at derica fell 3.0% from ₦1,111 to ₦1,078, Oloyin at paint scale fell 2.6% from ₦5,080 to ₦4,950 and Drum at paint fell 1.4% from ₦4,515 to ₦4,450. Garri (White) fell 2.3% to ₦1,300 per paint across nine markets.
Only Two Lines Rose By More Than One Per Cent
Both were imported rice at the smallest measure. Imported Rice (Short Grain) rose 3.3% at derica scale, from ₦833 to ₦861 across nine markets, and Imported Rice (Long Grain) rose 2.6% at derica, from ₦944 to ₦969 across eight. The same rice fell at bag scale in the same week. Long grain lost 1.3% at 25kg to ₦28,562 and 1.2% at 50kg to ₦56,250, while short grain lost 0.8% at 25kg to ₦26,350 and 0.7% at 50kg to ₦52,550. Small measures rose while wholesale units fell, which points to retail margin at the derica counter rather than pressure further up the chain.
What Lagos Pays Now
A 50kg bag of imported long grain rice averages ₦56,250, short grain ₦52,550 and Nigerian Manufactured Rice ₦52,143 across the seven markets that stock it. A crate of medium sized eggs averages ₦5,640, a tuber of medium sized yam ₦3,020 and a paint of Garri (Yellow) ₦1,460. Onions held at ₦1,000 per kilogramme and sweet potatoes at ₦790, neither moving at all.
Lagos Against The National Picture
The national data runs the other way. Nairametrics reported food inflation at 20.31% year on year in July 2026, the highest reading in ten months, and Vanguard recorded it as the fifth consecutive monthly rise. BusinessDay noted that Lagos posted the second highest month on month food inflation of any state in July at 13.48%, even as headline inflation eased to 15.43%. The weekly Lagos series now shows the turn that a monthly national average has not yet absorbed.
