Egg prices are rising again in Lagos. FoodPrices Nigeria data from the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems market survey shows the mean price of a crate of Medium Sized Eggs across 10 markets rose from ₦5,500 to ₦5,540 in the fourth week of October 2026, a 0.73% increase on the third week. It is the third consecutive weekly rise.
The Dip Has Reversed
In the first week of October, the crate fell to ₦5,400. Since then the mean has climbed to ₦5,430, ₦5,500 and now ₦5,540, a cumulative 2.59% increase. The current mean is the highest weekly reading since the first week of September, when a crate averaged ₦5,600.
Ile-Epo Leads the Climb
The rise has come from a few markets. At Ile-Epo Market, a crate rose from ₦5,500 in the first week of October to ₦6,000, up 9.09%, making it the dearest market in Lagos. Ajah Market rose from ₦5,400 to ₦5,800, up 7.41%, and Sabo Market Yaba, the cheapest market a month ago at ₦5,200, now charges ₦5,400, up 3.85%. The cheapest crate this week is ₦5,300 at Fresh Food Hub Mushin.
The gap between the cheapest and dearest market has widened again to ₦700, a 13.21% premium, after narrowing to ₦400 in the first week of October.
What It Means at Home
At the mean, a crate of 30 eggs now works out to about ₦185 an egg. A household buying one crate a week pays ₦22,160 over four weeks at this week's mean, ₦560 more than at the early October price. A caterer or bakery buying ten crates a week pays ₦7,000 more a week at Ile-Epo Market than at Fresh Food Hub Mushin.
What Other Surveys Say
Other Nigerian surveys put Lagos egg prices higher than the Ministry mean, which suggests the current rise starts from a lower base. Legit.ng reported on 18 October, citing a News Agency of Nigeria survey, that a crate sold for ₦5,700 to ₦6,500 in Lagos in August, and cited FarmPaddy estimates putting a benchmark crate at ₦5,650. The Lagos mean of ₦5,540 is 2.81% below the bottom of that August range and 1.95% below the benchmark. Earlier in the year, BrandSpur reported Lagos retail crates at ₦6,000 to ₦8,500 during a shortage of day-old chicks. The sources agree that Lagos eggs remain well below their 2026 peak, while FoodPrices Nigeria data shows the October trend has turned upward.
