The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, has handed over newly completed Veterinary Primary Health Centres to Lagos and Ogun states to strengthen animal healthcare and lift livestock productivity, according to Vanguard. The centre in Epe, Lagos, was handed over on May 13, 2026, while the facility in Ijebu Igbo, Ogun, was transferred earlier on May 5, as Voice of Nigeria reported.
Part of a National Rollout
The two facilities form part of a nationwide plan to establish 774 Veterinary Primary Health Centres, one in each local government area, Voice of Nigeria noted. The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, represented by the Director of Animal Health and Reproductive Services, Dr Alao Mitchell, said the initiative was designed to bring veterinary services closer to farmers and improve disease prevention, surveillance and control, while boosting productivity and food security, according to Vanguard. The minister described the clinics as strategic investments in the future of livestock production, as reported by the Federal Ministry of Information.
Phased and Equipped
The programme is being implemented in phases across 20 states, with seven of a planned 21 model veterinary hospitals already completed in Sokoto, Niger, Enugu, Ondo, Borno, Adamawa and Edo, Vanguard reported. The new centres are fitted with consultation and treatment rooms, laboratories, offices, storage units, water supply, electricity and perimeter fencing, according to The Sun.
