Jigawa State has launched one of its largest farm support packages to date, with Governor Umar Namadi flagging off the 2026 Wet Season Agricultural Support Programme at the Dutse Township Stadium. The intervention covers subsidised fertiliser for 90,000 farmers, 6,000 solar-powered irrigation pumps and 1,185 motorcycles for agricultural extension workers, according to Arise News.
Who Pays for What
Of the 90,000 beneficiaries, 50,000 will receive inputs directly under the state government's programme, while another 40,000 will be covered through a partnership involving the Bank of Agriculture and StarAgri under the Renewed Hope Smallholder Support and Value Chain Fund, as AgroNigeria reported. The package extends to seeds, pesticides and herbicides at a 30 per cent subsidy, building on earlier interventions that the state says have reached more than 900,000 farmers, according to Leadership, which noted that over 70 per cent of the state's population depends on farming.
Targeting the Cost of Energy
Namadi said the design responds to the specific pressures farmers face, particularly delayed access to quality inputs, rising energy costs and climbing production expenses, according to Daily Post. The solar pumps are intended to cut the fuel bill for irrigation and support year-round cultivation, while the motorcycles are meant to get extension agents to farming communities faster with technical advice. The governor framed the wider agenda simply, telling Leadership that "supporting agriculture means building a prosperous future for Jigawa".
