The three garri varieties FoodPrices Nigeria tracks in Lagos moved in three different directions in the week to 14 August 2026, the only category in the basket to do so.
White Down, Yellow Up, Ijebu Still
Garri (White) fell 2.3%, from a mean ₦1,330 to ₦1,300 per paint across nine markets. Garri (Yellow) rose 0.3%, from ₦1,456 to ₦1,460 across ten markets. Garri (Ijebu) did not move at all, holding at ₦1,260 across the five markets that stock it.
Yellow now carries a premium of ₦160 over white, a difference of 12.3%, and that gap widened this week because the two moved apart rather than together. Ijebu sits below both despite its reputation, though its mean rests on the thinnest coverage of any line in the Lagos dataset.

Five markets is half the network. A flat reading on that base says less than a flat reading drawn from ten, and a single stall changing its price next week could move the Ijebu mean more than a genuine shift in cassava supply would. The market count is published on every line for exactly this reason.
The Longer Cassava Picture
Garri has been one of the clearest decliners in the national record. Nairametrics reported National Bureau of Statistics data showing white garri sold loose down 39.86% year on year in April 2026, and Legit.ng put the April average at ₦808.96 per kilogramme against ₦1,345.10 a year earlier. Legit.ng separately recorded yellow garri falling 39.52% between January 2025 and January 2026.
The direction is not settled, however. BusinessDay reported that the National Bureau of Statistics named garri among the items pushing food inflation up to 20.31% in July 2026. A commodity can be far cheaper than last year and still be firming month to month, which is close to what the Lagos weekly figures show.
The Widest Retail Gap In The Basket
Garri carries the largest proportional spread of any tracked item. Oyingbo Market sells white at ₦1,000 per paint against ₦2,000 at Ajah Market, exactly double. Yellow runs from ₦1,000 at Mile 12 Market to ₦2,000 at Ajah on the same doubling. A household buying two paints a week pays ₦8,000 a month at Mile 12 and ₦16,000 at Ajah.
