Eggs are getting dearer again in Lagos. FoodPrices Nigeria data from the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems market survey shows the mean price of a crate of Medium Sized Eggs across 10 markets rose from ₦5,400 in the week of 2 October 2026 to ₦5,430 on 9 October, ₦5,500 on 16 October and ₦5,540 on 23 October. That is a ₦140 or 2.59% rise over three weeks, with the latest week up 0.73%.
The Dip Did Not Last
The October climb reverses the fall recorded at the start of the month, when the crate slipped from ₦5,500 to ₦5,400. At ₦5,540, the mean is now above where it stood in late September and at its highest since the first week of September, when it averaged ₦5,600. It remains 4.32% below the 2026 high of ₦5,790 recorded in the second week of July.
Four Markets Raised, None Cut
The rise came from four markets. Ile-Epo Market raised its crate from ₦5,500 to ₦6,000 over the month, a 9.09% increase that makes it the dearest market in the survey. Ajah Market went from ₦5,400 to ₦5,800, up 7.41%. Agbalata Market rose from ₦5,200 to ₦5,500, up 5.77%, and Sabo Market Yaba from ₦5,200 to ₦5,400, up 3.85%. The other six markets held their prices all month. The cheapest crate is now ₦5,300 at Fresh Food Hub Mushin.
The spread between the cheapest and dearest market has widened from ₦400 on 2 October to ₦700, a 13.21% premium for buying at Ile-Epo rather than Fresh Food Hub Mushin.
What It Means at Home
At the mean, a crate of 30 eggs now works out to about ₦185 an egg. A household buying one crate a week pays ₦22,160 over four weeks at this week's mean, ₦560 more than at the 2 October price. A bakery or caterer buying ten crates a week pays ₦7,000 more a week at Ile-Epo Market than at Fresh Food Hub Mushin.
What Other Surveys Say
National surveys suggest Lagos remains relatively cheap for eggs. Legit.ng reported on 18 October that National Bureau of Statistics data put the national average price of a crate at ₦6,149.18 in May, and cited a News Agency of Nigeria survey that found crates selling for ₦5,700 to ₦6,500 in Lagos in early August. The Lagos mean of ₦5,540 sits 9.91% below that national May average and below the bottom of the August range. Legit.ng described egg prices as showing signs of falling nationally, which differs from the October rise in the Lagos survey. Earlier in the year, BrandSpur reported Lagos retail crates at ₦6,000 to ₦8,500 during a shortage of day-old chicks, so the current rise is small by comparison.
