Medium Sized Eggs at 1 Crate rose from ₦5,620 to ₦5,640 across all 10 Lagos markets in the week to 14 August 2026, an increase of ₦20 or 0.4%, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems market survey.
The Only Protein Line in the Basket
Eggs stand apart from the grains, tubers and garri that make up the rest of the survey, and they were one of only five lines out of 21 to record an increase this week. The move is small. A household buying four crates a month now spends ₦22,560 against ₦22,480 last week, a difference of ₦80. Against the softening recorded across beans, yam and rice bags, eggs held roughly flat rather than joining the decline.
A ₦1,400 Gap Across the City
A crate costs ₦5,100 at Sabo Market Yaba and ₦6,500 at Agbalata Market. The ₦1,400 gap is a 27.5% premium. A household taking four crates a month spends ₦20,400 at Sabo prices and ₦26,000 at Agbalata prices, a difference of ₦5,600 in a month, which is 70 times what the week's movement changed.
Production Costs Have Been Pushing the Other Way
The Guardian reported in March 2026 that Poultry Association of Nigeria Lagos chairman Mojeed Iyiola blamed a shortage of day-old chicks for egg scarcity, with hatcheries booked out and retail crates quoted as high as ₦8,500. Chronicle agreed on the pressure, reporting in May 2026 that feed, transport and electricity costs were forcing farms to shut and that some retailers were charging ₦8,500 a crate. Those retail quotes sit well above the Lagos survey mean, which is a market-level average rather than a supermarket or farm-gate figure. Nairametrics reported National Bureau of Statistics data showing eggs among the items recording sharp year-on-year declines in March 2026, which agrees with the flat-to-modest picture in Lagos this week rather than with a renewed surge. Vanguard reported food inflation at 20.31% year-on-year in July 2026, a national rate against which a 0.4% weekly move in Lagos eggs looks contained.
