BUA Scales Up Food to Cut Prices

BUA Group, one of Nigeria's largest industrial conglomerates, has announced a major expansion of its food production operations in 2026, accelerating investment across agriculture and manufacturing in a push it says is aimed at easing prices, according to Brand Spur.

An Ambition to Lead the Market

The company said the expansion is designed to strengthen BUA Foods' market position while supporting wider efforts to improve food supply, with a stated ambition of becoming Nigeria's largest food business by 2027, as Brand Spur reported. The plan was reaffirmed during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu, at which the group restated its support for the administration's economic reform agenda and its commitment to continued investment in the Nigerian economy.

Why Bigger Output Matters

Nigeria has faced sustained pressure from rising food prices over the past two years, driven by supply constraints, exchange rate adjustments, higher transport costs and broader economic reforms, the same report noted. Expanding domestic production has increasingly been identified by industry stakeholders as a critical route to improving affordability, and a larger, locally produced supply of staples could introduce more competition in segments where costs have climbed.

A single company's expansion will not settle prices on its own, but more domestic supply changes the balance over time. FoodPrices Nigeria tracks verified retail prices for staples, flours and oils across Lagos markets, where the effect of added local capacity would eventually show up.
