Beans fell on all four measures FoodPrices Nigeria records in Lagos in the week to 14 August 2026, the only category in the basket to move in a single direction at every unit size. The figures are means across markets from the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems survey.
Drum Led, Oloyin Followed
Beans (Drum) fell 3.3% at derica scale, from ₦1,000 to ₦967 across nine markets, and 1.4% at paint scale, from ₦4,515 to ₦4,450 across ten. Beans (Oloyin) fell 3.0% at derica, from ₦1,111 to ₦1,078 across nine markets, and 2.6% at paint, from ₦5,080 to ₦4,950 across ten.
The Oloyin premium held steady through the fall. Oloyin costs ₦111 more than Drum at derica scale, a difference of 11.5%, and ₦500 more at paint scale, a difference of 11.2%. Both varieties moved down together rather than one pulling away.
A Long Retreat, Not A Weekly Blip
The national record shows this is a trend rather than a single week. Nairametrics reported that National Bureau of Statistics data put brown beans down 44.89% year on year in April 2026. An earlier Nairametrics report put the March year on year fall at 49.32%, to ₦1,325.85 per kilogramme. Legit.ng recorded brown beans falling from ₦2,458.53 to ₦1,262.43 between January 2025 and January 2026, a decline of 48.65%, with white beans down 43.03% over the same period.
A P.M. News survey of two Ibadan markets in June 2026 found beans among the staples that had become cheaper since the last quarter of 2025, alongside rice and garri. The Lagos weekly series is now recording the same direction at street level.
The Spread Between Markets
The mean hides a wide range. Mushin Market sells Drum at ₦900 per derica against ₦1,100 at Mile 12 Market, a difference of 22.2%. At paint scale the range is wider still, from ₦2,700 at Fresh Food Hub Mushin to ₦5,500 at Agege Market for Drum, and from ₦3,500 to ₦6,000 for Oloyin between the same two locations. A household buying one paint of Oloyin weekly pays ₦14,000 a month at the cheaper source and ₦24,000 at the dearer one.
