Ajah Market Beans Ease to N70,000 a Bag in June After February Peak of N80,000

A 50kg bag of Oloyin beans at Ajah Market has come off its early-year peak but remains expensive heading into the middle of 2026. The market average sat at N60,333 a bag in the week of February 2, climbed to N64,000 by February 9, and peaked at N80,000 in the week of February 23. By the week of June 1 the bag had eased to N70,000. That leaves it 12.5% below the February peak, yet still 16.0% above where it began February, a reminder that the relief from the peak has been partial.

The smaller measures tell a steadier story. A paint bucket of Oloyin held at N4,500 through February, lifted to N5,500 by March 16 and stayed there into June. A derica moved from N1,000 in February to N1,300 by June 1. For households that buy beans in small daily quantities rather than by the bag, the increase has been gentler but persistent.

White beans appeared in the Ajah data with a full set of measures in the week of June 1, including a 50kg bag and a 25kg bag, alongside a 25kg bag of Oloyin. Because these carry no earlier readings at Ajah, they are first verified captures rather than price movements, and they widen the picture of what the market now stocks.

The beans move at Ajah fits the national turn. The National Bureau of Statistics reported food inflation at 16.06% year on year in April 2026, up from 8.89% in January and above the headline rate for the first time in eight months, with beans named among the staples behind the shift. Vanguard reported that brown beans, while far cheaper than a year earlier, were still ticking up month on month, and the Nigeria Agribusiness Group called for restoring guaranteed minimum prices to coax farmers back to the crop.

Live readings sit on the Ajah Market real-time prices page, and buyers can line up beans by measure on the price check tool.
