Nigeria is trying to put better weather information in the hands of its farmers. The Federal Government and the International Fund for Agricultural Development have launched the Climate-Smart Agribusiness Partnership for Resilience, known as CSAPR, a project anchored in the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones Programme, according to Vanguard. The project is financed by the Gates Foundation, executed by IFAD and implemented by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security through the processing-zones programme, and it will run from 2026 to 2028, according to AgroNigeria.
Weather Data as a Tool
The core idea is to fold climate science into everyday farm decisions. CSAPR is designed to embed Climate Information Services into commercially viable agribusiness products delivered through public-private partnerships involving the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, financial institutions, insurers, agri-tech companies and farmer organisations, according to Nigerian NewsDirect. The project is already showing physical results. Early achievements include the installation of automated weather stations in Ogun and Kano states, the start of climate information dissemination and the distribution of digital devices to farmer-organisation leaders to speed up weather advisories, according to ATQ News.
